The purpose of the Houston Walking and Racking Horse Association is to promote any and all matters pertaining to the history, breeding, publicity, sale, and improvement of the Tennessee Walking Horse and Racking Horse breeds in the greater Gulf Coast area of Texas.

The versatility of both breeds is extraordinary as exemplified in both the show ring and on the trail. These horses come in all sizes and colors, however their dispositions are unmistakable. Each have their own individual personalities and quickly become part of the family.

These gaited horses date back to the early 1800's when horses were more than just a pleasure mount, but a necessity as well. These horses could be found plowing a field on Monday and pulling the family surrey to church on Sunday. Only after the invention of power machinery did these animals gain the respect of their grace and beauty displayed today. Both the Tennessee Walking Horse and Racking Horse exhibit such a smoothness in ride that many first time riders relate it to sitting in a rocking chair.

Although the Tennessee Walking Horse and the Racking Horse have two different distinct ways of going, as well as separate registries, many of these animals carry both registrations and continue along much of the same breeding lines.

If you have not had the opportunity to see one of these beautiful horses up close or had the chance to ride one personally, we invite you to contact us and learn more about them. You will quickly see that the owners are enthusiastic, fun-loving people, who are proud of and jump at the chance to talk about their chosen breed.

If you presently own one of these fine steeds and are looking for an association to share your goals and objectives, whether it be in the show ring, trail rides, or both, look no further you have found it in the HWRHA. The activities sponsored by the club are diverse, from formal horse shows, to play days, to trail rides. We also have an extremely active youth program, the YAP. Our organization is structured strictly from volunteer work, with no paid offices. Board meetings are held six times throughout the year and a general meeting is held quarterly.

Our club currently has approximately 200 family members. The membership resides primarily in Texas. However, we do have representation from other states as well. The membership fee for the club is $25.00 per family per year. HWRHA membership gives you the ability to participate in the High Point award program, the futurity, a monthly copy of the Walk On newsletter, and free advertising in the newsletter section. Membership has its privileges. We welcome all individuals interested in the Tennessee Walking Horse and Racking Horse industries to join our organization.
